Treatment

There is no reliable treatment for symptomatic rabies.  Rabies can only be treated with a post-exposure vaccine if symptoms have not yet appeared.  However, in 2005, a teenager named Jeanna Giese was the first person to ever survive symptomatic rabies after she was put into an induced coma by her doctors. This treatment was dubbed the Milwaukee Protocol.

Since Jeanna Giese’s miraculous recovery, the protocol has been tried on other rabies victims but has only been successful with two other rabies victims.
